Barcelona is no stranger to fitness. From beach bootcamps to packed spin studios, the city has always pulsed with energy. But behind the scenes, a quieter revolution is taking place: the rise of boutique, small-group training studios. And the data shows this is just the beginning.

A City Ready to Move

Barcelona is home to nearly 1.7 million people, and two-thirds of them fall into the working-age bracket (15–64). That’s over 1.1 million potential clients looking for ways to stay fit and feel good.

Zoom in further, and you’ll find a sweet spot: women aged 25–45. With over 300,000 women in that bracket, this is a group that’s busy, health-conscious, and increasingly seeking expert-led, community-based fitness options.

Strength Is the New Spin

Search trends tell a clear story. Across Spain and especially in urban centres like Barcelona, searches for "entrenamiento de fuerza" (strength training) have grown steadily over the past 5 years. While big-box gyms still dominate the ad spend, what people want is shifting: less intimidation, more instruction, and better results.

On platforms like ClassPass, Mindbody, and Instagram, boutique studios in Barcelona are gaining traction. Users are engaging more with small-group strength sessions, and interest in personalisation, mobility training, and functional fitness is climbing. These aren’t passing fads—they reflect deeper shifts in how people want to move.

Small Studios, Big Impact

In our recent scan of the local market, studios offering 4–8 person group classes are thriving. Prices per session range from €15 to €30, with monthly packs and memberships driving commitment and retention. Studios like B3B are leaning into specialised niches (high-performance, women-only), while others focus on inclusive vibes and expert coaching.

Consumers today don’t just want a workout. They want:
  • A sense of belonging
  • A program that delivers visible progress
  • Trainers who know their name and their goals
Boutique studios are uniquely placed to deliver on all three.

Timing Matters

The boom in remote work has made schedules more flexible. The pandemic reshaped how people value health. And large gyms, while recovering, still can’t offer the intimacy or coaching quality of a small studio.

For new or growing gym owners, the message is clear: the market is warming up. The demand is real. And clients are looking for something more personal than another treadmill.

This Isn’t a Trend. It’s a Shift.

If you’re thinking of launching or scaling a boutique studio, now is the time to do it boldly. Lead with community. Double down on coaching quality. Use technology to automate the boring stuff. And carve out a space that feels like home to the clients you serve.

Barcelona’s boutique fitness boom isn’t peaking. It’s just getting started.
